House Republicans approved a sweeping budget framework that would go a long way in advancing President Donald Trump's domestic policy agenda.
The successful 217-215 vote proved to be a major victory for House Speaker Mike Johnson, who held multiple meetings throughout the day to win over those holding out in GOP ranks. The vote went almost completely along party lines, with every Democrat voting against the resolution. Representative Thomas Massie was the only Republican to join them. At one point, House Republican leaders appeared to have briefly canceled the vote and sent members home, before calling the lawmakers back to the floor just minutes later.
Adopting the budget plan is a crucial step toward passing a bill that includes border security, tax and energy provisions that Trump advocated for on his campaign trail. The pressure is now on the Senate to reconcile a competing version of the plan it adopted last week with the one passed by House Republicans.
