The United States and South Korea will begin their major joint military exercise next week, Yonhap reported Monday, citing Seoul's Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS).

The annual Ulchi Freedom Shield (UFS) exercise is set to kick off on August 19 and last until August 29 and will consist of "main computer simulation-based command post exercise, concurrent field training and civil defense drills."

"In particular, the ROK-U.S. alliance will further strengthen its capability and posture to deter and defend against weapons of mass destruction," the JCS said.
