The United States Senate fell short of votes to advance a bill to sanction officials of the International Criminal Court (ICC) as the court pursues justice against Israeli leaders accused of war crimes.
The "Illegitimate Court Counteraction Act," introduced by Senator Tom Cotton, sought to mandate sanctions on anyone involved with the ICC's activities related to investigating or prosecuting Americans, Israelis, or other allies of the US. Although 54 senators supported the bill, 45 opposed it, falling short of the 60-vote threshold needed for passage.
Earlier in May, the ICC sought arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and then-Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, along with three leaders of Hamas, alleging their involvement in war crimes and crimes against humanity during the conflict in Gaza.
