United States Department of State criticized the government of Nicaragua over its decision to cancel the citizenship of 94 political opponents on Wednesday.
"These acts are inconsistent with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which provides that everyone has a right to a nationality," it was noted in the statement. It argued that the move marks a "step backward for the Nicaraguan people and a further step toward solidifying an autocratic regime."
Most of the people targeted have fled Nicaragua since President Daniel Ortega started arresting opponents two years ago and have been labeled fugitives. "Those who bravely defend democracy in Nicaragua will always be its citizens and patriots," the US statement stressed.
