The United States embassy in Madrid received a letter containing an explosive device, the Spanish Interior Ministry announced on Thursday.
The ministry said the embassy received the envelope around 12:30 pm CET. As a result, the entire diplomatic quarter around Serrano Street has been blocked by police corridors. The ministry added the federal court, Audiencia Nacional, is investigating the case and that an antiterrorist protocol has been activated.
Earlier in the day, the Interior Ministry revealed that a similar envelope was sent to Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez on November 24. In the meantime, Ukraine's embassy in Madrid, a company in Zaragoza, an air base near the capital, and the Defense Ministry all received packages of the same type.
