The United States has dispatched dozens of troops to Cyprus as fears of a wider conflict in the Middle East, having Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon as an epicenter, are growing.

Two US officials told CNN on Wednesday that the deployment aims to prepare for various scenarios, including the possible evacuation of US citizens from Lebanon if the situation deteriorates further. Earlier during the week, another official mentioned that the region is at its most precarious point since the Hamas attack on October 7.

Previously, the United Kingdom announced plans to send 700 troops to Cyprus while the Pentagon indicated that a limited number of US military personnel would also be stationed in the area.
