The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has extended Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for nationals from Venezuela and El Salvador, along with other countries on Friday.

The TPS for Venezuela will be extended for 18 months, from April 3, 2025, to October 2, 2026, to assist around 600,000 beneficiaries who are unable to return due to ongoing political and economic turmoil. For El Salvador, TPS is also extended for 18 months, covering the period from March 10, 2025, to September 9, 2026, amid the environmental challenges in the country. Additionally, extensions were announced for 103,000 Ukrainians and 1,900 Sudanese residing in the US. DHS emphasized that all groups must re-register and meet eligibility criteria.

This announcement comes just days before President-elect Donald Trump takes office, with his administration expected to take a tougher stance on immigration.
