The annual inflation in the United States soared to a new record of 7.9% in February, according to a report published by the Bureau of Labor Statistics on Thursday. The monthly change came in at 0.8%, with both figures meeting market expectations.
The 12-month increase reached the highest numbers since the period ending January 1982, led by index jumps for gasoline, shelter, and food. The energy index climbed 25.6% in the last 12 months, and the food index expanded by 7.9%.
Excluding food and energy, the annual growth of consumer prices stood at 6.4%, the report also showed, while the prices rose 0.5% month-over-month.
