The United States Department of State announced on Friday it has informed the United Nations about its intention to withdraw from the Paris Agreement on climate change. The State Department said the US told the UN, which is depositary for the Paris deal, that it plans to pull out of the agreement "as soon as it is eligible to do so."
According to the statement, the US may consider "re-engaging" in the agreement in case it is renegotiated to be "more favorable" for America and its people.
The US vowed to continue addressing climate-related challenges, such as lowering greenhouse gas emissions, and plans to participate in international talks on climate change after it leaves the Paris Agreement, the State Department noted.
US President Donald Trump first announced his intention to pull the country out of the Paris deal on climate change in June, claiming it was "bad" for Americans. The Paris Agreement stipulates that no signatory can officially begin the process of its withdrawal from the deal before November 2019.
