The United States administration is considering the closure of nearly 30 foreign embassies and consulates as it is planning to reduce its diplomatic presence abroad in order to cut administration costs, CNN reported on Tuesday, citing an internal State Department document.
According to the report, Washington could shutter its embassies in Luxembourg, Malta, Lesotho, the Central African Republic, the Republic of Congo and South Sudan. Additionally, it is also looking at closing five consulates in France, two in Germany and two in Bosnia and Herzegovina, while one consulate in the United Kingdom, South Korea and South Africa might be closed.
The document also calls for downsizing the US diplomatic missions in Somalia and Iraq, and "resizing" other diplomatic posts, according to the media outlet.
