Wagner Group leader Yevgeny Prigozhin considered capturing Russian military leaders as part of the events that unfolded last June 24, when his private army attempted to overthrow Russia's military leadership, The Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday.
According to the report, which cites US officials, the latter were aware of the plans. In addition, the report also states that the premature launching of the plot was most likely one of the elements that led to the failure of the mutiny.
One of the people familiar with the matter added that Western intelligence agencies were aware of the plans through examination of electronic communications intercepts and satellite imagery. However, the conspiracy was leaked, forcing Prigozhin to improvise a new plan.
