The United States announced on Tuesday that it is sanctioning three officials from Iran's Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS) for their alleged involvement in the kidnapping of former US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agent Robert Levinson in 2007. Levinson has officially been presumed dead since 2020 and the first Trump administration sanctioned two other Iranian agents linked to his disappearance.

The US State Department said MOIS "has a history of wrongfully detaining US nationals and has been designated across various sanctions programs." It added that the US will "continue our relentless efforts to secure the release of all US nationals who are held hostage or wrongfully detained abroad.
