A group of 50 United States senators called on Thursday for US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer to engage in talks with Taiwan on a potential bilateral trade agreement between the two countries.
In a letter signed by 42 Republican senators and eight Democratic senators, lawmakers noted that the country should seek to reduce its"reliance" on China by widening supply chains through the trade deal with Taiwan.
The agreement would "serve as a signal to other nations that Taiwan is a viable partner that is open for business," the letter said.
