The United States military will send more fighter jets and Navy warships to the Middle East to strengthen regional defensive capabilities, US Department of Defense Deputy Press Secretary Sabrina Singh announced early Saturday.
The USS Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group is set to take over the duties of the USS Theodore Rosevelt Carrier Strike Group, which is currently deployed in the Central Command. The goal is to enhance preparedness by deploying additional land-based ballistic missile defense (BMD) systems and assigning an extra fighter squadron to the Middle East.
As per the statement, the US will enhance its combat readiness to defend both itself and its partners in light of the threats posed by Iran and its allies, Hamas and Hezbollah. The capabilities will be "purely defensive" and will "send a message of deterrence."
