US targets Russian LNG shipping amid sanctions

EPA/MIKE THEILER

The United States announced new sanctions aimed at hindering Russia's Arctic LNG 2 project, a key component of Moscow's energy strategy amid its ongoing conflict with Ukraine.

The Department of State said it targeted Gotik Energy Shipping Co and Plio Energy Cargo Shipping OPC PVT LTD, both linked to the project. These companies own and manage vessels involved in deceptive practices to transport liquefied natural gas (LNG) despite US sanctions. Namely, the LNG/C New Energy conducted a ship-to-ship transfer with a previously sanctioned vessel, LNG/C Pioneer.

The U.S. has also identified another vessel, LNG/C Mulan, as part of this effort.
