US to conduct flight operations with Guyana

The United States Embassy in Guyana announced that the US Southern Command (USSOUTHCOM) will conduct flight operations in collaboration with the Guyana Defence Force on Thursday. The drills aim to enhance the bilateral security partnership and strengthen regional cooperation, the embassy said.

The US "will continue its commitment as Guyana’s trusted security partner and promoting regional cooperation and interoperability," the embassy added. The drills come amid heightened tensions between Guyana and Venezuela and fears Venezuela could annex a disputed area controlled by Guyana. Brazil also deployed troops to the Venezuelan border yesterday, with Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva saying that "we do not want or need a war in South America."
