A United States State Department spokesperson urged on Sunday Sri Lankan leaders to "work quickly" on the resolution of the crisis that is affecting the country.

The official also urged the country "to identify and implement solutions that will achieve long-term economic stability and address the Sri Lankan people's discontent."

On Saturday, the months-long protests over the country's economic crisis led to the presidential palace and the prime minister's house being broken into. The latest reports indicate that Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa intends to resign on Wednesday.
