Nearly half a million Russian and Ukrainian troops combined are estimated to have been killed or wounded since the war started, unnamed United States officials told the New York Times on Friday.

Based on officials' estimates, Russia's total number of casualties is nearing 300,000, consisting of 120,000 fatalities and 180,000 injuries. On the other side, Ukraine is believed to have likely lost 70,000 personnel, with potentially 120,000 being wounded. According to the officials, the casualties include active duty, reserve, and paramilitary troops.

However, the officials underscored that the figures represent their estimates, and that the exact number of casualties cannot be precisely determined as Russia is believed to be underreporting casualties, while Kiev does not publish official reports on soldier losses.
