United States Trade Representative (USTR) Jamieson Greer said on Wednesday that it is for President Donald Trump to decide whether the country should raise tariffs on Russian exports.
Speaking before the Senate Finance Committee, Greer pointed out that Russia is already subject to "heavy sanctions" and "embargoes" due to its military operation in Ukraine. He also noted that there is "no effort" in the administration to "invigorate" trade with Russia without introducing a reciprocal tariff.
Furthermore, Greer reiterated that many countries approached the US to renegotiate their trade relations after Trump hit them with tariffs on their exports.
