Ukraine's Verkhovna Rada failed to pass a resolution on Monday affirming President Volodymyr Zelensky's continuation of power until a new president is elected, Ukrainian MP Yaroslav Zheleznyak reported on his Telegram account.
The measure, which required 226 votes, received only 218, and it aimed to stress institutional continuity under martial law, citing Article 108 of the Constitution.
The failure of the resolution comes at a critical moment in the negotiation with the US. Last week, former President Donald Trump accused Zelensky of acting like a "dictator." Zelensky, for his part, said on Sunday that he is willing to step down if Kiev receives security guarantees.
