The Ukrainian parliament voted to join the International Criminal Court (ICC) on Wednesday. The Verkhovna Rada ratified the ICC's founding Rome Statute with 281 votes out of 450 members. Ukraine will now be able to nominate judges and participate in their election, as well as participate in its investigations. The ICC started an investigation in March 2022 into war crimes committed during the war in Ukraine.
"By taking this step, Ukraine demonstrates its unwavering commitment to strengthening international justice. Ukraine has already worked effectively with the ICC to ensure comprehensive accountability for all Russian atrocities committed in the course of Russian aggression. This work will now be even more effective. With the ratification of the Rome Statute, Ukraine also took another significant step toward joining the EU," Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said.
