French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said during a visit to Syria on Friday that there is "hope for a sovereign, stable and peaceful Syria" following the fall of President Bashar al-Assad. He warned this hope is "fragile" but offered France's support in rebuilding the Syrian state.

Barrot visited the French Embassy in Damascus, which has been closed since the early days of the Syrian civil war in 2012. "In the coming weeks, depending on how security conditions evolve, we will gradually prepare the arrangements for reestablishing the French presence here in Damascus," he said.
