European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen argued on Wednesday that the European Union needs to revive trade talks with the Mercosur bloc in South America.
Von der Leyen's remarks came nearly four years since the EU reached a political agreement with Mercosur that would cover a population of about 770 million people. Still, the European Parliament didn't ratify the 2019 deal at the time citing concerns related to Brazil's fight against climate change and the deforestation of the Amazon Rainforest.
Mercosur represents a political and economic alliance between Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay. During his visit to the continent over the weekend, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz also reaffirmed the need for a trade agreement.
