Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen said on Sunday that he will appoint a new chancellor of the transitional government "in the course of the following week," after the current Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer announced earlier today that he will step down.
Van der Bellen claimed that Nehammer "assured" him that the transition will be carried out in an "orderly and calm" manner, which is why the outgoing chancellor will manage the existing transitional government "for the time being." The Austrian president noted that appointing the new interim chancellor will "ensure the orderly administration and continuation of the affairs of the Republic of Austria."
The president also announced that he will meet with the leader of the Austrian Freedom Party, Herbert Kickl, on Monday to "discuss the new situation." Meanwhile, Nehammer's party, the Austrian People's Party, picked General Secretary Christian Stocker as its interim leader.
