Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic VSS Unity 25 mission completed a successful test flight on Thursday, the final one before the company starts flying commercial passengers.
The spaceplane VSS Unity and carrier mothership VMS Eve lifted off at 11:16 am ET from Spaceport America in New Mexico. The rocket-powered spaceship detached at an altitude of about 12 kilometers and took its six crew members to the space boundary, climbing more than 80 kilometers above the Earth's surface.
VSS Unity turned into a glider after spending about 3 minutes in space, landing at 12:38 pm ET, with the company tweeting: "Touchdown, VSS Unity! Our crew and spaceship are back on Earth after landing smoothly." This marks the fifth Virgin Galactic spaceflight.
