South Koreans started casting their ballots in the country's pivotal parliamentary elections as 14,259 polling stations across the country opened up on Wednesday, Yonhap reported.
With just over 30 million people eligible to cast their ballots, and 300 National Assembly seats up for grabs, the election is bound to serve as an assessment of South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol's ruling People Power Party. The news agency reported that the main opposition Democratic Party (DP) is expected to win over 200 seats, which would greatly restrain the Yoon administration in the enactment of its policies throughout the remaining three years of the current president's five-year term, scheduled to end in 2027.
"Please vote to prevent the political force that has betrayed the people from attaining a parliamentary majority," DP leader Lee Jae-myung said prior to the polls opening.
