Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer asserted on Tuesday that an embargo on the imports of Russian gas wouldn't be included in the latest sanctions package against Russia agreed by European Union leaders.

"The gas embargo will not be a topic, [German Chancellor] Scholz has made this clear as well. Russian oil is much easier to compensate for... Gas is completely different, which is why a gas embargo will not be an issue in the next sanctions package," Nehammer explained.

Last night, EU leaders reached an agreement on cutting around 90% of oil imports from Russia by the end of this year.
