The White House outlined United States President Donald Trump's reasoning for imposing the 25% tariff on Mexican imports in a series of posts on the social media site X, stating that the tariffs are aimed at forcing the country to cooperate with the United States in the fight against drugs.
"President Trump is implementing a 25 percent tariff to be paid for by Mexican producers until Mexico cooperates with the US in the fight against drugs," the White House wrote, calling Mexican cartels "the world's leading traffickers of fentanyl, meth, and other drugs."
Additionally, the White House claimed that "these cartels have an alliance with the government of Mexico and endanger the national security and public health of the United States."
