United States National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan stated that if Ukraine were admitted to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) today, that would mean NATO would be at war with Russia.

The United States and other nations member of NATO, Sullivan said, "are not ready" for that decision, and moreover, it is not "reasonable at this moment."

Secondly, the national security advisor also pointed out that although Ukraine has made substantial progress, more steps must be taken before it can be part of the alliance.
