WHO halts hiring due to lack of funds

World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus announced on Monday that the agency is halting staff hiring and limiting travel in response to a financial crisis sparked by the United States' withdrawal.

"The US announcement has made the situation more acute, and we have announced a set of measures with immediate effect to protect our work on workforce to the greatest extent possible," Ghebreyesus added. "We're freezing recruitment, except in the most critical areas. We're significantly reducing travel expenditure and we are looking to renegotiate major procurement contracts and reduce capital investments."

This comes after US President Donald Trump decided for the second time to remove the US from the organization, citing unequal financial contributions compared to other member countries.
