The prosecution in the case trying The Wall Street Journal's (WSJ) reporter Evan Gershkovich's alleged espionage activities asked on Friday the Sverdlovsk Regional Court in Yekaterinburg to sentence him to 18 years in prison.

Meanwhile, the Sverdlovsk Regional Court's press secretary said that Gershkovich pleaded not guilty to the charges. They added that the verdict will be announced at 5:00 pm local time, or 3:00 pm Moscow time.

Gershkovich has been accused of using his position as a reporter to collect secret information about the activities of defense company UralVagonZavod, located in Sverdlovsk, amid Russia's military campaign in Ukraine and pass on the details to the United States Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).
