WTO: China's tariffs on Japan's steel against rules

The World Trade Organization (WTO) stated in the ruling published on Monday that China's anti-dumping duties it introduced on Japan's stainless steel products in 2019 are against the group's regulations.

The WTO's statement noted that the Chinese Commerce Ministry (MOFCOM), which imposed the tariffs citing concerns about the domestic industry and market prices, "failed to base its determination of price comparability on an objective assessment of positive evidence because it relied on its scope of subject product findings, without any further explanation, to show that there were no price comparability issues between product categories."

"Pursuant to Article 19.1 of the DSU [Dispute Settlement Understanding], we recommend that China bring its measures into conformity with its obligations under the Anti-Dumping Agreement," the WTO concluded.
