United Kingdom Defense Secretary Ben Wallace told The Economist in an interview on Wednesday that the prospect of him assuming the position of the next North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) secretary general, the position currently held by Jens Stoltenberg, is likely "not going to happen."

"America wants Mr. Stoltenberg to stay," the British defense secretary underscored.

Recent media reports indicated that there is a strong possibility of the military alliance extending Stoltenberg's tenure as its chief, following his nine-year term in the position. According to the sources, the alliance's member states could ask Stoltenberg during the next month's summit to stay on as the secretary-general for an additional year as they reportedly struggle to agree on a successor.
