Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Sunday said that the Donbass town of Bakhmut has been completely destroyed, but refuted Russia's claim of victory.

Zelensky clarified that Bakhmut remains in the hearts of the Ukrainian people and that Kiev continues to fight for the city. "It's a pity, it's a tragedy, but for today Bakhmut is only in our hearts," the leader stated.

His comments come after the Russian private military company Wagner Group claimed to have captured Bakhmut, which Ukraine quickly denied. Russian defense ministry later declared that Russia had won the battle for the city.
