United States Special Envoy Steve Witkoff arrived at Moscow's Vnukovo Airport on Wednesday, where he was greeted by Russia's Special Representative for Economic Cooperation with Foreign Countries Kirill Dmitriev, TASS reported, citing a source close to the negotiations.

Witkoff's visit comes just ahead of US President Donald Trump's Friday deadline for Russia to advance towards peace with Ukraine or deal with increased US sanctions. Trump seemed to downplay the effect these sanctions might have, noting repeatedly that Russia is "good" at dodging them.

When asked by reporters what Russian President Vladimir Putin could do to avoid the new sanctions, Trump said: "Yeah, get a deal where people stop getting killed."
