United States Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen stated on Wednesday, ahead of the first in-person bilateral meeting with Chinese Vice Premier Liu He in Switzerland, that there is a "pressing need" for Washington and Beijing to continue communicating about economic issues.
"While we have areas of disagreement, and we will convey them directly, we should not allow misunderstandings, particularly those stemming from a lack of communication, to unnecessarily worsen our bilateral economic and financial relationship," Yellen stressed.
She went on to say that the two countries have a responsibility to show that they can manage their "differences and prevent competition from becoming anything ever near conflict." Liu added that China and US should "bear in mind the bigger picture" and "seek common ground" in order to maintain stable relations.
