Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Saturday he held a positive meeting with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to discuss ways to protect Ukrainians and move closer to an unconditional ceasefire.

According to Zelensky, special focus was placed on preparing the European Union's 17th sanctions package against Russia, which he stressed must "target key sectors of the Russian economy and serves as one of the elements of pressure on Russia to restore peace."

"We also talked about strengthening cooperation between Ukraine and the EU, particularly through the ReArm Europe initiative," he said.
