Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Tuesday he had a telephone conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in which he welcomed the new ceasefire between the latter country and Hamas and the release and exchange of hostages.

"It is crucial to ensure a reliable and lasting peace, so that people can live in safety and security," Zelensky tweeted, linking the matter to marking the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration and avoiding tragedies like the Holocaust from happening again.

"We also discussed maintaining close contact with partners, particularly the United States and President [Donald] Trump," Zelensky added. "We addressed current bilateral matters and agreed to maintain close contact in the near future."
