Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky shared a post on his Telegram channel on Thursday stating that a Russian missile had hit "an ordinary civilian vessel" that he claimed was carrying a cargo of wheat across the Black Sea to Egypt.

"Ukraine is one of the key global contributors to food security. The internal stability and life of dozens of countries in different parts of the world depends on the normal and uninterrupted operation of our food export corridor," the Ukrainian president said in his post.

According to Zelensky, the vessel was hit as soon as it left Ukrainian territorial waters. He emphasized the importance of Ukraine's food supply to multiple African and Middle-Eastern countries and said that food security "should never be a target for missiles."
