Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky took to X on Wednesday to express hope that the United States will abide by its previous statements that it will not recognize Crimea as Russian territory.
"Emotions have run high today. But it is good that 5 countries met to bring peace closer," Zelensky wrote as he summed up today's talks in London with US Special Envoy for Ukraine and Russia Keith Kellogg, as well as representatives from the United Kingdom, France and Germany. "Ukraine will always act in accordance with its Constitution and we are absolutely sure that our partners in particular the USA will act in line with its strong decisions," he added and attached a press statement by then-US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo from 2018 in which he says that Washington "rejects Russia's attempted annexation of Crimea and pledges to maintain this policy until Ukraine's territorial integrity is restored."
Earlier today, US President Donald Trump described Zelensky's comments on not recognizing "the occupation of Crimea" as "very harmful" to the peace negotiations with Russia.
