Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky spoke with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Monday and shared his view of "Russia’s true intentions and plans," adding that it's "obvious that the Russians simply want to buy time, not end the war."
Zelensky said decisions about his country's future can't be made without Kiev's participation. "Just as there can be no decisions without clear security guarantees. Until this is achieved, sanctions against Russia must remain in force and be constantly strengthened," Zelensky wrote on X.
His remarks come ahead of the summit between United States President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Friday. Earlier today, Trump expressed hope that a ceasefire would be achieved as a result of the meeting, stating he would notify the Ukrainian president of its outcome. He remained cautious about the prospect of ending the war, however, stressing that his encounter with Putin might or might not go well.
