Zuckerberg admits buying Instagram for better function

Meta Platform Inc. Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Mark Zuckerberg said on Tuesday that the reason for acquiring Instagram and WhatsApp was that it was too difficult to make such apps from scratch.

On the second day of an antitrust trial his company is facing against the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), Meta's head was asked why he was so intent on buying Instagram in one specific email from 2012 that served as evidence of internal communications. Zuckerberg confessed that Instagram's product was better developed and had a "better camera" in comparison to Facebook's efforts at the time, saying that "building a new app is hard," but evaded questions on elimination competition.

He also admitted that Meta's numerous attempts to create new applications weren't successful, further reaffirming the FTC's suspicion of acquisition.
