United States Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said that he "seriously doubts" China's invasion of Taiwan is "imminent." However, he also said the behavior of the Chinese military has been "very provocative" recently and that it is "attempting to establish a new normal" with increased areal and maritime activity near Taiwan.
US State Secretary Antony Blinken added that Washington is "not looking for conflict" and will "seek to keep the lines of communication open" with China in order to avoid the possibility of escalation due to "miscalculations" of the situation.
