Outgoing United States President Joe Biden commuted the sentences of 37 out of 40 inmates on federal death row, the White House announced on Monday.
"These commutations are consistent with the moratorium my Administration has imposed on federal executions, in cases other than terrorism and hate-motivated mass murder," the statement read. "Make no mistake: I condemn these murderers, grieve for the victims of their despicable acts, and ache for all the families who have suffered unimaginable and irreparable loss," but "in good conscience, I cannot stand back and let a new administration resume executions that I halted."
These individuals will now serve life sentences without the chance of parole. Biden previously commuted 1,500 sentences and pardoned 39, including his son, Hunter Biden, who was facing sentencing for a federal gun charge conviction. This pardon also extends to another case where Hunter admitted guilt for federal tax evasion.
