United States President-elect Joe Biden decided to nominate William J. Burns (pictured) as the next director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), his transition team announced on Monday.

Burns served as the US ambassador to Russia from 2005 to 2008 and was the undersecretary of state for political affairs between 2008 and 2011.

Earlier reports suggested Biden had also considered former national security advisor Tom Donilon, ex-CIA Acting Director Michael Morell and former Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson for the position of the CIA chief.
