Biden: Trump wouldn't use debt limit as negotiation tool

United States President Joe Biden criticized on Tuesday the Republican members of Congress that do not want to agree to raise the debt ceiling by stressing that even his predecessor Donald Trump used to say he could "never imagine" anyone would use that limit as a "negotiating wedge."

In a guest appearance at North America's Building Trades Unions (NABTU) summit in Washington DC, Biden described the possibility of a default as "totally irresponsible" and condemned the Republicans by trying to force him to "agree to all the cuts" to pursue their agenda. He stressed that even that party, during the mandates of presidents from its lines, used to raise the debt ceiling when it was necessary.

Biden underscored that, thanks to the bills such as the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), "we've made all this progress" while being "fiscally responsible." He also warned that the Republicans want to repeal parts of that legislation and introduce "tax give-aways" for the richest in the country.
