Borrell: Israel's op in Rafah leads to 'humanitarian catastrophe'

High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell (pictured) expressed his concern about the potential "humanitarian crisis" following the military operation the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) aims to conduct in Rafah, southern Gaza.

"I echo the warning by several EU member states that an Israeli offensive on Rafah would lead to an unspeakable humanitarian catastrophe and grave tensions with Egypt. Resuming negotiations to free hostages and suspend hostilities is the only way to avert a bloodshed," Borrell posted on X.

In response to the escalating tension, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has instructed the IDF to devise a plan for the safe evacuation of civilians from Rafah. The primary objective of this operation is to eliminate any remaining Hamas battalions in the area. It is expected that the operation will be completed by March 10, further intensifying the confrontation between the IDF and locals.
