Brazil's Lula backs trading currency for BRICS countries

Brazilian President Luis Inacio Lula Da Silva stated on Tuesday that he supports a trading currency for the BRICS countries.

According to the president, this doesn't mean the group should reject the US dollar, but it signals their will to "sometimes" trade with their "own currencies." "The BRICS is not a counterpoint to the G7, the G20, or anything else. We want to organize ourselves as the Global South, something that did not exist before," Lula told the press while reflecting on the impact of the group.

"We are important in the global debate, sitting at the negotiating table on an equal footing with the European Union and the United States," Lula said.
