Breakthrough on Gaza ceasefire reportedly reached

Israeli officials have announced a breakthrough in Gaza peace negotiations overnight, with a potential hostage-ceasefire deal finalized, pending approval from Hamas, the country's media reported on Monday.

The proposed deal closely mirrors the outline revealed in May 2024 and it reportedly involves three phases according to the Channel 12 reporting. The first two stages would see the release of approximately 34 Israelis classified as "humanitarians" and further focus on the return of young men and soldiers. The third phase would then address the establishment of an alternative government in Gaza and plans for its reconstruction.

The breakthrough was reportedly achieved after midnight following talks between Mossad head David Barnea, United States incoming President Donald Trump Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff, and Qatar Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim bin Jabr Al Thani.
