Canada is preparing to designate Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) a terrorist organization, CBC News reported on Wednesday. Canada already listed IRGC's Quds Force as a terrorist group in 2012 and the Iranian government as a "regime that has engaged in terrorism and systematic and gross human rights violations."
According to sources, the decision could be announced this week. The report added the Canadian government has been under pressure to act against the IRGC ever since Iran shot down a plane over Tehran in 2020, resulting in the death of 55 Canadian citizens and 30 residents. The calls to designate the organization increased amid Iran's involvement in the Middle East crisis following the start of the Israel-Hamas conflict on October 7, 2023.
